What Is Therapy Really Like? What Happens in That First Session

Updated: Apr 23

A safe space to talk. No judgment. Just support.
A safe space to talk. No judgment. Just support.

You have been thinking about it for a while. Maybe a friend suggested it. Maybe you searched online at 11pm when everything felt like too much. Either way, you are here, and you are wondering the same thing most people wonder before they ever make that call.

What actually happens in therapy?

The unknown is often the hardest part. So let us walk you through it.

Before You Even Walk In

Scheduling your first session does not commit you to anything. It is just a conversation. At Hotch Healing, you can reach out by phone or email. Someone will get back to you, answer your questions, and help you find a time that works.

Before your first session, you will complete some brief intake paperwork. This covers basic background information, what brings you in, and a few questions about your history. It sounds clinical, but it simply helps your therapist come prepared.

What the First Session Is Really About

Here is what most people do not expect: your first session is not about fixing anything.

It is about getting to know each other.

Your therapist will ask you questions. What is going on in your life right now? What made you decide to reach out? What do you hope therapy will help you with? You do not need rehearsed answers. You do not need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up and talk.

Crystal Hotchkin, LCSW, brings over 20 years of experience to every first session. Her approach is patient and nonjudgmental. She is not evaluating you. She is listening.

Will You Have to Talk About Your Childhood?

Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on what you bring in.

Some people want to understand how their past connects to how they feel today. Others want practical tools for managing what is happening right now. Good therapy meets you where you are. Crystal tailors her approach to your specific needs and goals — not a one-size-fits-all template.

What If You Cry?

That is okay. It happens more often than you think, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Sometimes the first session brings up things you have been holding for a long time. A good therapist expects this. Crystal does not rush past those moments. She sits with you in them.

What You Will Leave With

You will not walk out of your first session with all the answers. But you will leave with something important: a clearer sense of what you want to work on and whether this is the right fit.

Fit matters. A strong connection with your therapist is one of the most important factors in whether therapy helps. If it does not feel right, that is useful information too — not a failure.

Most people leave their first session feeling lighter. Simply saying things out loud, to someone who listens without judgment, does more than you might expect.

What Therapy Is Not

Therapy is not someone telling you what to do. It is not being judged for your choices. It is not a sign that something is seriously wrong with you.

It is a dedicated hour to focus on yourself. To untangle what has felt knotted. To build tools for the hard days.

Most people wish they had started sooner.

What About Privacy?

Everything you share in therapy is confidential. Your therapist cannot discuss your sessions with anyone without your written permission — with very limited legal exceptions that your therapist will explain before you begin.

You can talk freely. That is the point.

Insurance and Payment

Hotch Healing accepts most major insurance plans including BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Medicare. Private pay options are also available.

If you are not sure whether your plan covers therapy, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask. It is worth a five-minute phone call.

You Do Not Have to Be in Crisis to Come

This is one of the most common misconceptions about therapy. You do not need to hit rock bottom. You do not need a diagnosis. You do not need a dramatic reason.

Feeling stuck is enough. Feeling anxious is enough. Feeling like you want things to be different is enough.
