Common Questions About DWI Assessments in Wake County

If you're facing a DWI charge in North Carolina, you probably have a lot of questions—and maybe some fears about what comes next. That's completely normal.

We hear the same concerns from clients every day. Here are honest answers to the questions people ask most often about DWI assessments.

Can I Fail a DWI Assessment?

This is the number one question we hear, and we understand why. The word "assessment" sounds like a test.

Here's the truth: a DWI assessment isn't pass or fail. It's a conversation to determine what level of education or treatment you need for license restoration. The assessment helps identify whether you qualify for the 16-hour ADETS education program or whether a more intensive treatment program would be more appropriate.

There's no "wrong" answer. Being honest during your assessment actually helps ensure you get the right level of support.

Will My Answers Be Shared with the Court?

Your assessment is confidential. We provide the court and DMV with documentation that you completed your assessment and our recommendation for education or treatment—but the details of your conversation stay private.

Our goal is to help you, not to create more problems. The more honest you are, the better we can support you through this process.

How Long Does the Assessment Take?

Plan for about 45-60 minutes. It's a one-on-one conversation—not a group setting, not a lecture. Just you and your assessor discussing your situation, your history, and your next steps.

You'll leave with a clear understanding of what's required and the paperwork you need for court and the DMV.

How Much Does It Cost?

The state-mandated assessment fee is $100. If you're recommended for ADETS (the 16-hour education program), that program costs $160 plus $25 for the required workbook.

We know unexpected costs add stress to an already difficult situation. If you have questions about payment, just ask—we're happy to discuss options.

What If I'm From Out of State?

We accept out-of-state referrals with proper documentation. If you received a DWI in North Carolina but live elsewhere, you can still complete your assessment and ADETS program with us.

Just bring your court paperwork and any documentation from your home state, and we'll help you navigate the process.

Do I Need a Lawyer Present?

No. Your assessment is separate from your legal proceedings. You don't need an attorney present, and most people come alone.

That said, if you have questions about the legal side of your case, we always recommend consulting with a qualified attorney.

What If I Can't Afford ADETS Right Away?

You have six months from your assessment to enroll in ADETS. This gives you some time to plan financially. Just don't wait too long—completing your requirements sooner means getting your license back sooner.

What Should I Bring to My Assessment?

To make your appointment go smoothly, bring:

  • A valid picture ID

  • Your court papers from your DWI case

  • Your BAC reading, refusal report, or blood test results

  • Your NC driving record (must be within 30 days)

  • Your insurance card (front and back)

If you're missing something, give us a call before your appointment and we'll let you know if you can still proceed.

What Happens After My Assessment?

You'll receive a recommendation for either ADETS (education) or a treatment program. Most first-time offenders with a BAC of .14 or less qualify for ADETS, which is 16 hours completed over four days.

Once you complete your required program, you'll receive a Certificate of Completion—the documentation you need to begin the license restoration process.

Still Have Questions?

We know this process can feel overwhelming, especially when you're already dealing with the stress of a DWI charge. That's why we're here to help—not judge.
